APU Research Breakthrough Drives Autonomous Robotics Innovation into Industry
In March 2026, another milestone was added to IoTech Solutions' remarkable journey when Intelli SwarmGuard, an AI-powered autonomous mobile robot system developed through APU's research ecosystem, earned national recognition at the Hardtech Deeptech Commercialisation Accelerator (HDCA) 2025, securing an RM5,000 Support Grant that validated the platform's technical maturity and commercial potential, with the system designed specifically for semiconductor manufacturing inspection and featuring distributed AI for multi-robot collaborative coordination, real-time anomaly detection achieving 94% accuracy, SLAM navigation with millimetre-level positioning precision, and predictive maintenance capabilities that can reduce downtime by up to 80%, making it a transformative solution for the precision-driven semiconductor industry.
The project was spearheaded by IoTech Solutions as a technology spin-off from APU's Centre of Excellence for Research & Development of IoT (CREDIT), with the core team led by Founder and CEO Ir. Narendran Ramasenderan, Operations Manager Krishna Ravinchandra, Advisor Prof. Dr. Vinesh Thiruchelvam, Robotics Systems Specialist Sin Jun Yan, Software Stack Specialist Chin Kah Min, and Associate Systems Engineers Harshayn Vythilingam and Gayatri Reshma Penjarla, all of whom celebrated the HDCA milestone as recognition of their technical excellence and the platform's real-world relevance; as Ir. Narendran noted, the HDCA programme provided invaluable exposure to Penang's semiconductor ecosystem and mentorship from industry veterans, and with the support grant fueling the next phase of development, IoTech Solutions is now preparing to move SwarmGuard toward commercial proof-of-concept trials, targeting collaborations with semiconductor multinational corporations operating in Penang's Batu Kawan industrial cluster, a strategic move that reflects the company's deliberate commercialisation focus.
For APU, the success of IoTech Solutions demonstrates the university's growing strength in translating research breakthroughs into impactful technologies through innovation-driven entrepreneurship, with Intelli SwarmGuard standing as a powerful example of how university-driven research can evolve into transformative technologies that create tangible value for industry and the broader digital economy, reinforcing the APU-owns, IoTech-exclusive-licence model that has consistently proven its ability to move innovation from the lab to the field, and adding yet another layer to IoTech's already impressive portfolio that spans healthcare, security, conservation, industrial inspection, and disaster response, all built on the same foundation of rigorous, problem-first research and commercial discipline.
